7 Online Writers I Follow and You Should Too

Being a blogger is  not as easy as it sounds.

Most of us try very hard to stand out and garner attention in this vast sea of people trying to stand out and garner attention.

Many people say it was easier back then, when the internet was young and new. Quality content was so difficult to come by that when people find one, they celebrate it as the proverbial ‘golden egg’ as Jon Morrow puts it.

Stories of the now big-time probloggers are quite famous and are even a part of their brands, so I think it’s important to learn from successful online writers who create content like it’s nobody’s business.

Here are seven writers/bloggers I follow (and I'm in awe of) and turn to when it comes to looking for answers to my blogging/writing questions (and links to their posts that I found particularly useful).

Carol Tice is perhaps one of the most popular, experienced, and successful freelance writers I know. Her blog, Make a Living Writing, was started as her way of helping other freelance writers, both old and new, navigate the sometimes-stormy waters of online writing.

This list isn’t complete without the Philippines’ very own Stef Gonzaga. Stef founded The Freelance Pinoy, a blog full of very practical articles on freelancing specifically for Filipinos.

As a newbie writer, I learned so much from TFP and treated it as my go-to site for questions from Paypal to setting up my own website to dealing with lousy clients.

Bamidele Onibalusi

I see Oni as the golden boy of the freelance writing world. Seriously, this guy’s story is awe-inspiring and motivating.

You know that well-used line, “If I can do it, you can too”? For me, Oni is the only guy who's believable enough to utter those words. Head on over to his YoungPrePro site and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

Samar is one of the kindest freelance writers I know. I say this because she responded to my ‘frantic’ email one afternoon.

She gives great advice and she shares it all on her blog, The Writing Base. I can relate to many of her posts about the different concerns of freelance writers.

Marya is a blogging coach and online copywriter. What made me fall in love with her site and her writing, aside from the helpful posts, is her free ebook. It’s one of those few “free stuff” that you can genuinely say “I can’t belive this stuff is free!” So join her mailing list and get it!

Dana Sitar

Dana is one of my recent writer heroes. She runs a blog called DIY Writing with the tagline, “Resources, tips, and tools for writers in search of a path.”

Finding her blog was like an answer to a prayer, considering that I am one confused introvert writer who is in search of a path.

Kelly Gurnett

Or Cordelia if you will, runs the Cordelia Calls It Quits blog. It chronicles all the things she called quits on (love it!) and how her life was changed because of 'quitting' and freelance writing.

I found her through the Brazen Careerists where she gives the best career advice, especially for freelancers. She’s funny, she gets sassy (in a good way), and she inspires me to write.

There 'ya have it!

So if you’re a beginning blogger, freelancer or not, be sure to check these people out. I can assure you, they have tips you can use, be it for your small business blog, your freelancing career, or for improving your writing skills.

Do you have writers or bloggers who inspire you? Share them! I don't think there's such a thing as too much inspiration!

PS: I’ve noticed Oni is the only guy in this list. (Haha!) I just resonate with women freelancers more, I guess. [shrugs]
